Together, we identified some conditions and equipment viewers should have to successfully access Internet television and video online.

Questions not answered here for Internet television may be addressed at the Mogulus Support Center.

First, let's list the basic equipment and Internet access details viewers need to watch Internet television (Mogulus) and video (You Tube):

Connecting to the Internet. If you are using a mobile device, at home or at the office, your Internet access can be a DSL connection, but a Cable modem connection is preferred. If you use a DSL connection, speeds and bandwidth may vary according to the "volume" of traffic on the Internet at any one time of the day. More traffic = less connectivity; less traffic = better connectivity. Libraries and Univeristies and Colleges generally offer better bandwidth access.

Choice of Browser. We spoke with the Mogulus Internet television team and they recommend Mac OSX, prefer Firefox, or Safari. All browsers are easily downloaded for free from the Internet.

Open Source Systems. Any suped up Mac will do!

Preferred Processor speed: 2 GH. If you have purchased your computer within the last two years you should be okay and able to accomodate 1.75 GH.

RAM: Mogulus recommends the minimum of 1G

Speed Test: Test your Internet speed with the free tool: SpeedTest: The Global Broadband Speed Test. You will need an Internet connection measuring not less than 400 kb/s - See Wikipedia: A kilobit per second (kbit/s or kb/s or kbps).

Q: What's the difference between "streaming" internet television - such as Mogulus Internet Television - and "archived" video - such as You Tube?

From Stream Recorder:

Streaming is playing audio/video content in real time through the Internet. This does not eat up any space on your computer's hard drive.

A fast Internet connection is required to view the videos at its clearest because the video quality is dependent on the speed of your connection. If you experience frequent pauses or buffering on your viewing or if you're not satisfied with the quality, consider downloading the clip (if possible).

Downloading is transferring data from a server into your own computer. You need to have sufficient hard drive space to be able to save the content.

Although downloading may take some time, the advantages are that you can watch the content anytime since it's already saved in your computer and you don't need to be connected to the Internet to watch the video. The video will also be of higher quality with no interruptions upon playback.

Q: What's an Internet TV "player"?

A "player' is the term given to describe the web tool that delivers the Internet TV channel content to your web page so you can watch the programs. Players are also referred to as a "widget" - a portable chunk of code that can be embedded in a web page. There are thousands of widgets that perform services for us. An example of one is this date countdown widget.

Q: When my Welcome page finishes loading, I can see a program already in progress. Where is that content coming from?

You are viewing the "Auto Pilot" selection. The Auto Pilot broadcasts content pre-selected by the channel's Manager. It is generally chosen because of timeliness of content or it is a featured interview(s).

Q: What does the "On-Demand" title on the right side of the player mean?

There are three ways of viewing programs on the Internet TV player. The first is to watch a Live Show as it is broadcast. The second is to watch the pre-selected Auto Pilot program that is automatically running on your player as the web page downloads.

The third option, is for you to make your own selection from the "On-Demand" area located on the right side of your player. Use your curser to scroll the right hand vertical side bar up and down to make your selection from the On-Demand column. The On-Demand half of the player contains different Folders of programs, or categories of content that may be of interest to you. Within each Folder may be one or more programs or interviews that fall into that category of topic.

For example, the Folder entitled, "Women's Enterprise Network Live Shows" will contain all of the Live Shows taped and archived to date; other Folders will contain pre-recorded interviews or Internet video search results of interest selected by the Channel manager.

Q: What does "Live Show" mean?

Live Show means that 'Live Show' broadcast you are viewing was broadcast as it was happening on the Channel. Our preferred Internet TV provider, Mogulus, allows us to broadcast any content live and once the program has concluded, save up to five hours of content to our channel for you to look at again later, or look at if you missed the Live Show.

Mogulus has figured out a way to shift the traditional latency of broadcast - or delay - from 20 seconds to one second. This is powerful in that what you experience is 19 seconds closer to you!

Q: How do I participate in the chat?

First of all, the chat function is best experienced off of the Mogulus Channel page, rather than off of a player widget. You can get to the Mogulus Channel page directly by clicking the Mogulus name at the upper right corner of the player. Your Channel will open in a new window.

Click on the chat tab to make the chat appear if it doesn't already. Once you have done that, choose a nickname for yourself. We prefer first names on chat for the sake of conversation. Your name will appear appear next to what you say in the course of conversation above and will be how others will identify you. Type your text in the space bar located at the lower right area. You can change the style, font and color of your text by clicking on the related icons on the left. Once you are finished with your comment, simply click return and your comment will be published. If your comment is longer than the space allows for, click what fits, publish, and continue with your comment, clicking return again, once you have completed your idea.

Once you're done, press enter or click on the 'say' button.

Q: Are there some simple guides I should keep in mind when participating in chat?

Yes, definitely.

It's a good idea to remember you are participating in a conversation with others you may or may not know. Be hospitable, and act as a guest. Identify yourself and where you are from. Offer your Blog or web site address so you can continue the conversations following the Show.

Use this conversation as an opportunity to learn from others and to build your networks to other like minded individuals from anywhere.

Ask intelligent questions. The creativity, passion and enthusiasm that everyone displayed for the future of rich media in Ohio was inspirational!

You are probably thinking “What’s with the chemistry lab picture?” The answer is that I am a chemist and teacher by trade, not a rich media expert. The seismic displacement that is about to occur in education is similar to the revolution that is taking place in the production and consumption of energy in this country. Many scientists are rightly concerned about the effect that unbridled fossil-fuel oxidation is having on our planet. In addition, there is much hand-wringing about the alarming reports of dwindling oil reserves. When discussing these developments with my chemistry classes, I like to tell my students that this has opened up enormous opportunity for them. If you think the computer and internet boom was something, just imagine the opportunity that will unfold when the entire energy enterprise is replaced.

In a similar fashion, many of us are rightly concerned about the process of education in this country. An alarm bell was sounded with the publication of “A Nation at Risk”, alerting us to facts of which many of us were well aware. Something is terribly wrong with the process of education in this country. Hand-wringing abounds. Once again, with the identification of fault lines in education, there is an opportunity to bring creative, intelligent and much overdue change to the essentially 19th century process of education. The Henry Fords and Andrew Carnegies of the 21st century are sitting in our classrooms! WE NEED TO COMMUNICATE WITH THEM.

Why not try and communicate with them in their language? Those of us with children in school are quick to recognize video game time as an effective carrot for homework motivation. If money is employed as a motivational tool, it is frequently used to buy a video game!!! The fact that individual learners have different styles has long been recognized by educators. The one size fits all role of the authoritative lecturer as the fundamental mode of delivery has been rightly criticized. Learner centered, interactive approaches to education are much more effective. Serious, immersive, interactive computer games can readily provide a superior educational experience.

The huge success of the Entertainment Games sector has provided resources that have led to ever more powerful game engines that are, thankfully, comprehensible to mere mortals. The technological tools needed to reach students are accessible and available. And much more than this, if we can focus some of the human resources mentioned in the first paragraph, together with those of us in education that see these developments as opportunity to communicate with our students more effectively, there is a bright future ahead for education in our region! That is what’s so exciting about Defrag q1.07. We can bring the essentially eclectic bunch together to bring about the creative and exciting changes to education that will mean so much to our children’s and their children’s lives. It is an evocation of African-American personal/familial/communal narratives and allegories, in words and distinctive interpretive visual compositions. It is a hymn of nuanced harmonies and discords; a blending of voices sweet and rough. It is a trans-generational memoir, illuminating paths we walk, stories we’ve been told, and the dream-places we haunt. It is a continuation of my four decades of art-making and research, and my creative collaborations with poet/novelist Dorothy Mallory Jones, my mother (LISSEN HERE!, book 2004, and The Trouble I’ve Seen, broadcast video 1976). IN THE SWEET BYE & BYE is a dialogue between traditional and contemporary creative and cultural practice. It is composed of poetic and narrative text, digital paintings, photo-collage, animations, soundscapes, and immersive virtual environments. Themes and threads of the work are derived from personal and family memoirs, and African-American/Diaspora oral traditions. The 2D, 3D and animation compositions are my original work, and archive of photo, film, video and graphic imagery, dating to the late 19th century, and spanning the planet. IN THE SWEET BYE & BYE will speak to diverse audiences, through the breadth and depth of its content, and the three modes of presentation. Each presentation mode (installation, web, book) of IN THE SWEET BYE & BYE transposes and interprets the source material into distinctive form, exploiting the particular capabilities and character of the mode. Each is a stand-alone experience, yet complimentary to the other modes. IN THE SWEET BYE & BYE is a process of migration and transformation of concepts and designs through technologies, and temporal terrains. B&B SL: An Immersive Memior Developing IN THE SWEET BYE & BYE in Second Life (B&B SL) began mid Jan 07. It marks the paradigm shift in vision. It begins the migration of source material and core expressive intentions, and transformations of concepts and ideas, as I investigate designing in/for this dynamic immersive environment.

Speaker: Philip Mallory Jones, Resident Artist, Aesthetic Technologies Lab, Ohio University

Case: 0027

Title: Northeast Ohio Videogame demonstration

Topic/X-cutting theme: Games, and Education

Description: Demonstration of videogame models developed by Northeast Ohio Videogame Developers Meet-Up Group members.

Speakers: NEO Videogame Initiative members

Case: 0028

Title: Keynote

Topic/X-cutting theme: Entrepreneurship and Business Development

Description: Overview of value of innovation and entrepreneurship in a global market. Examining that paradigm can answer a number of important questions. It's not immediately obvious how Open Source works economically. Probably the worst consequence of this lack of understanding is that many people don't understand how Open Source could be economically sustainable, and some may even feel that its potential negative effect upon the proprietary software industry is an overall economic detriment. Fortunately, if you look more deeply into the economic function of software in general, it's easy to establish that Open Source is both sustainable and of tremendous benefit to the overall economy. Open Source can be explained entirely within the context of conventional open-market economics. Indeed, it turns out that it has much stronger ties to the phenomenon of capitalism than you may have appreciated. Join us for a dynamic presentation.

Pre-read: The Emerging Economic Paradigm of Open Source

Speaker: Bruce Bruce Perens, Vice President E-mail: bruce@sourcelabs.com

Athena Diamantis, Director of Sales E-mail: Athena@sourcelabs.com Ph: 440.716.9890

(local contact)

Case: 0035

Title: Visualizations of Ancient Ohio Civilizations with an Overview of CERHAS, Current & Future Projects

Topic/X-cutting theme: Modeling & Simulation, Education, Digital Media Communications/Collaborative Leadership

Description: The Center for the Electronic Reconstruction of Historical and Archaeological Sites is an interdisciplinary research laboratory within the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) at the University of Cincinnati. The mission of CERHAS is to unite research, education and public awareness through innovative and accessible high-quality multi-media presentations, and to connect the importance of our heritage to our modern conditions in meaningful ways.
